Welcome from the Bay Section
BILL WHITTON, Section President
The Bay Section of CASCWA is not just alive and well, it is thriving! We hosted our annual Spring Workshop at the Martinelli Conference Center in Livermore on Friday, May 21, 2010. The workshop was attended by more participants than expected. Hedy Cheng, Director of Attendance Counts and member of the State SARB, compellingly presented on “Building Awareness: Why Chronic Absenteeism Matters.” Peter Giordando of the StoryTeller Project presented “Creativity is Critical,” a lively and engaging demonstration of his group’s work with incarcerated adults, youth and at-risk students throughout northern California. The Bay Section is hopeful to secure these presenters for the 2010-11 State Conference
As we look forward to the 2010-11 school year, the Bay Section is eager to work on the nuts and bolts of the exciting...and sure to be the most memorable...2011 State Conference in San Francisco. The choice of the location and forward-thinking of event planning at this highly desired venue will reduce costs for hotel reservations by a night’s stay and eliminate the need for car rentals and the headaches and costs of parking altogether with the accessibility of local transportation. Plans are underway for dynamic presentations of interest to the full array of CASCWA members and those who should join CASCWA from schools, districts, county offices of education and allied professional fields. The Bay Section’s State Conference Planning Committee is being headed up by Alan Del Simone, Immediate Past Section President. Alan has already instilled in the Committee and the Section Board a “can’t be anything but fabulously successful” attitude
As incoming Section President, I want to express my gratitude and appreciation to the Section leadership and all the many members of our growing Section for their confidence. Alan’s dedication and hours of tireless work produced a year’s program and growth with which will be hard to compete. I am especially grateful to those members who have graciously agreed to serve the Section for another year: Alan Del Simone, Past-President; Robert Beltran, President-Elect; Rickey Jones, Vice- President; Janet McMurry, Secretary; and Cathy McConnell, Treasurer, will make up the core of the 2010—11 Bay Section Executive Board. Additionally, a number of Bay Section members are stepping up to help with planning the State Conference—Leslie Rothwell, Sheila Lawrence, Pat Acamo, Chiqui Cappa, and Frank Valadez are among the many notables. My good friends, long-time personal mentors and past State Presidents Jan Passama and Bob Burgess are also now involved with the Section leadership, Executive Board and Sate Conference planning… Alan is right: 2010—11 for Bay Section and the State Conference in San Francisco “can’t be anything but fabulously successful!”
