Welcome from Delta Sierra

Hector Molina, Section President

I want to thank all of our Delta-Sierra members for making my first year as president a very rewarding one. I was able to meet new colleagues who deeply care about our youth and parents. We had three staff development opportunities that were well attended, but most importantly, our participants found the workshops useful and were quickly able to share the materials with students, parents and/or staff.

The major highlight for 2009-10 was our May 2010 Delta-Sierra Symposium that was held at the Embassy Suites in South Lake Tahoe. We had over 100 attendees who gave up being away from their families over the weekend to gather new resources. Many of the participants have already reported using those resources at their schools/districts, or are eager to utilize them at the start of the new school year. Some of our key presenters were Octavio Castelo from LACOE (Parent Involvement and Student Achievement), Rod Little of the Freemont Police Department (Drugs 101), Deirdre Skelton from LACOE (Homeless & Foster Youth) and Veronica Robbins from Woodland (Grant Writing). Our Symposium would not have been as successful if it were not for Maria Bravo from LACOE and who is our Intercom Editor and new State CASCWA Secretary. Maria gave her time, energy and creative knowledge (she has lots of that) to help me develop the program, and to provide some friendly advice. “Maria, thank you for having my back.”

We are looking forward to having an even better 2010-11. We will be providing staff development for 135 Woodland teachers during the week of June 28-July 2 and Drug Identification Course on July 29-30 in Yolo County Office. In the meantime, have a great summer!
