Welcome from Southern California

SHERMAN GARNETT, Section President

We have made it through a very tough fiscal and emotional year in our schools. One can only pray that the long term effects of this year will not deter our students, families and those who serve them. Yes, Southern Section has survived. Our annual Scholarship Luncheon was held on Friday, June 4th at which time we awarded over four thousand dollars in scholarships to nine students who have survived despite all odds with the assistance of our CASCWA members.

In our efforts to continue to meet the needs of our membership, CASCWA Southern Section will be hosting our annual Fall Conference in Palm Springs September 29-October 1 at the beautiful Hyatt Regency which is located in the heart of downtown Palm Springs. This year's conference is entitled “Risky Business: Serving Students at Risk.” Conference Chairpersons Jerry Hime and Frank Boehler are finalizing another outstanding conference.

Additionally, Southern Section's executive board will be meeting during the latter part of the summer to plan our Legal Forums which is a series of no-cost workshops offered to CASCWA members in various locations in Southern California. CASCWA Southern section has offered our Legal Forums for a number of years from the desert (Calexico) to the sea (Santa Barbara) and throughout all of southern California (kudos to the late newsman Clete Roberts). Hot topics have included expulsions, search and seizure, sexual exploitation of minors and SARB. Visit the CASCWA web sites for actual handouts from the legal forums and other hot topics.

On a final note, we are always looking for your active participation. Be sure to contact any of our executive board members and get involved. Have a safe and restful summer.
